چکیده

The grain boundary character distribution (GBCD) is a direct measurement that can be determined from a single planar section. Since the GBCD is inversely related to the grain boundary energy distribution, it offers a useful metric for validating grain boundary energy calculations. Comparisons between the measured GBCD and calculated energies for 388 grain boundaries in Al show that, for boundaries with a statistically reliable number of observations, including general, R3, R7, R11 and h1 1 1i twist boundaries, the GBCD and calculated grain boundary energy have weighted correlation coefficients of approximately 0.9, reproducing both qualitative and quantitative trends seen in simulations. GBCDs for Ni and Al are positively correlated, as predicted by simulation. By combining GBCD measurements with simulation results, we validate grain boundary energy simulations in both low and high stacking fault energy metals. ! 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. An Overview of Accomplishments and Challenges in Recrystallization and Grain Growth

The study of microstructural evolution in polycrystalline materials has been active for many decades so it is interesting to illustrate the progress that has been made and to point out some remaining challenges. Grain boundaries are important because their long-range motion controls evolution in many cases. We have some understanding of the essential features of grain boundary properties over t...

The five parameter grain boundary character distribution of polycrystalline silicon

The purpose of this paper is to describe the five-parameter grain boundary character distribution (GBCD) of polycrystalline silicon and compare it to distributions measured in metals and ceramics. The GBCD was determined from the stereological analysis of electron backscatter diffraction maps. The distribution of grain boundary disorientations is non-random and has peaks at 36", 39", 45", 51", ...

Grain boundary energies in body-centered cubic metals

Atomistic simulations using the embedded atom method were employed to compute the energies of 408 distinct grain boundaries in bcc Fe and Mo. This set includes grain boundaries that have tilt, twist, and mixed character and coincidence site lattices ranging from R3 to R323. The results show that grain boundary energies in Fe and Mo are influenced more by the grain boundary plane orientation tha...

Grain boundary and surface energies of fcc metals.

Interfacial energies of five high-angle singular grain boundaries ~GB’s! in seven fcc metals—Ag, Al, Au, Cu, Ni, Pd, and Pt—are calculated employing lattice statics at 0 K using embedded-atom-method potentials. The results disagree with predictions of broken-bond models. The GB energies, however, exhibit a good linear relationship with the c44 elastic constants of these elements. This implies t...

Influences of Processing and Composition on the Grain Boundary Character Distribution

Experiments were performed to observe the effects of processing and composition on the grain boundary character distribution (GBCD) of SrTiO3, MgO, and Ni. Anisotropic interfacial energies and, in the case of nickel, crystallographic constraints, are expected to influence the evolution of the GBCD during processing. Interrupted grain growth experiments were performed with SrTiO3 to observe the ...
